¡Mande! by Gail Dimitroff ¡Mande!…Command me…I am at your service. The word reflects centuries of servitude in Mexico as well as the expectations of family, church, and society during the 1950s, when young Gail Burns married the man she thought would be the husband of her dreams. With child in arm, Gail followed him to Monterrey, Mexico so he could to study medicine while Gail practiced the domestic arts. By the end of the decade, Gail's dream had turned dark, and she learned to face the world fully awake and free to define for herself the expectations she would answer to.
